DEBRIS COMPANY

DEBRIS Company is dedicated to movement-dance theatre, action art and performance. It is a unique collective on the Slovak scene with a focus on non-verbal theatre with an overlap into contemporary dance, performance, visual art and site-specific projects. The leading personality, director and author of music of most of the company´s productions is Jozef Vlk, the choreographer is Stanislava Vlčeková. The company with its professional committment of the now numerous creative team has been producing pieces that can still surprise and explore new connotations. All DEBRIS productions feature a distinctive motif, theme and adaptation and can be classified as part of the multimedia, avant-garde current of the Slovak theatre scene and have won numerous awards.

The installation connecting movement, music and visual arts Big Breath is a multi-layered performative formation. The creation is inspired by the poetry of Ivan Štrpka, by his collection The Great Breath: Psychopolis, Thin Ice…

The project connects a professional production and work with the community. In addition to professional members of the DEBRIS company creative team, the project also involves 36 women, non-professional dancers of various ages.

The production was preceded by a workshop in which the participants tuned onto a common wave through body and voice work, exploring their perception and feeling, working with body and voice. The essence of the visual component is the costume created with the idea of recycling – a long-unworn, unused garment was thus given another chance in the production. The new look was achieved through up-cycling and creative alterations that “breathed” a new function into it.
