Niv Sheinfeld & Oren Laor (IL)

17 – 18 October, 8:00 pm

Slovak National Theatre Studio

Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor have been creating together since 2004, and have established themselves in the forefront of the Israeli dance field. Sheinfeld’s background in dance and Laor’s background in theatre, allow for a blending of the genres, combining dance with performance art and physical theatre in their creations.

In their work, Sheinfeld and Laor reflect on personal experiences and motivations, and on social and political agendas. Their dance vocabulary creates a bridge between the more traditionally defined dance, and contemporary openness to fresh forms of expression, drawing their inspiration from both high art and pop culture.
They create their own independent projects, and were also commissioned to create works for several dance companies.

Their work Two Room Apartment was chosen ‘Best Performance of the Year’ in 2013 by the Israeli Dance Critics Circle, and their work The Third Dance was crowned as the ‘Most Moving Performance’ in 2018.
Sheinfeld and Laor teach performance and movement research in dance and theatre academies in Israel and around the world, and they are also members of the artistic committee of Tmuna Theatre in Tel Aviv.

Sheinfeld & Laor’s stage works are presented on major platforms in Israel, such as the Israel Festival, Curtain Up, International Exposure, and Tmuna Festival, as well as renown festivals and theaters abroad such as Montpellier Dance Festival, Rencontres Choregraphique Internationale Saint Denis, Tanz Im August, Munich International Dance Festival, Centre Gavriella Mistral, Theater im Pumpenhaus, 4+4 Days in Motion, Tanec Praha, Julidans Festival, The Place, Pavilion Noir, Klap Maison de la Danse, Dampfzentrale Bern, American Dance Festival (ADF), Centre Nationale de la Dance (Pantin), Kaserne, Belgrade dance festival, Palais des Beaux Arts, Sibiu theatre festival, Cafe Budapest festival, Abrons Arts Center, Aura Dance Festival, Bratislava In Movement festival, Tanz! ART ATTACK is a celebration of dance, music, and inspiring texts from the 20th Century.

New Wave and Post Punk pop music of the 80s expressed the cry of a generation in the midst of political, economic and cultural turmoil, while demonstrating how pop music can also be intellectually charged. Not surprisingly, quite a few musicians of that time were influenced by the great art manifestos of the 20th century, which served as a declaration of intent and a call for action.

These manifestos were written throughout history by passionate artists in response to times of crisis and social instability, and for the purpose of presenting an alternative to the existing order.

Sheinfeld and Laor return to these sources of inspiration to remind themselves and their audience of the power of art to move us, create meaning, and form a community.

You – the audience – are invited to dance with us in your seats.
